Write a review. For those traveling in Brazil by car, Goias is very remote, even more so than Diamantina. Having started our trip in Rio, it was here that we got to know the real enormity of the country - we drove from Diamantina over 12 hours and kilometers, with an overnight stop on the way. Long road, bad weather the last three hours we were driving in heavy rain that did not let go during the first hour of our stay in Goias and the accumulation of colonial towns in the previous days probably caused our fatigue - Goias Velho did not appeal to us very much.
This does not mean, of course, that Goias stands out negatively among the old colonial towns - nothing like that, it is quite nice, picturesquely situated and beautifully renovated. But it did not delight us and did not capture anything special that would justify such a long journey. During our visit November it was also completely free of tourists. It gained a bit in our eyes in the evening when it stopped raining and we could enjoy the sunset over the river flowing through the historic center.
We traveled to Goias through Anapolis, but on my way back to Brasilia, I chose a different route, leading through another colonial gem - Pirenopolis. It was a bull's eye, I give you my word that Pirenopolis is probably the most beautiful colonial town in Brazil we have seen and we were a bit sweetened by a slight disappointment after Goias itself.

The areas on the right bank are tight up against the north-western hills, and have a popular character, indicated by the church of Rosario, which was traditionally reserved for slaves.
Here are also to be found the historic residential quarter and a characteristic market place. Although modest, both public and private architecture form a harmonious whole, due to the coherent use of local materials and vernacular techniques.
It was the first officially recognized urban core, the first borough to be planned West of the demarcation line of the Treaty of Tordesillas that defined the boundaries of the Portuguese possessions.
This is demonstrated by the urban plan adapted to the topography either side of the river, the architectural features and layouts, materials and building techniques. It is the last remaining example of the occupation of the interior of Brazil, as it was practiced in the 18 th and 19 th centuries.
Its townscape has therefore not been subject to any major changes in modern times. Otherwise, it is a good example of the appearance of the mining town of the 18 th and 19 th centuries, including its natural environment, which has remained intact. The few constructions that have taken place since the 19th century have been made using for the most part traditional techniques and building materials, or their size and architectural expression do not jeopardize the integrity of the place.
The historic centre has an important meaning for the local community, not only on account of its urban and architectural values but also for its rich social and cultural life.
