More advanced players may change the amount of each card type they have in order to focus on a particular play style or strategy. They all have different ways to help you get to your end goal of winning the match. You may play as many item cards per turn as you like. Only one stadium card can be played each turn. These cards all serve various purposes but are incredibly important for tipping a match in your favour.

The good news is a variety of methods can result in a winning deck! Let's take a look at two of the most popular approaches to assembling a solid deck and the design principles that underpin them. To better the chance that players can access key resources when they need them, all decks should include Supporter cards that draw cards from the deck.

Professor's Research and Marnie are two popular examples. It's critical to look beyond ways to get a card at the right time besides simply drawing it at the start of your turn. The remaining space in the deck should be dedicated to Trainer cards that enhance the player's strategy or disrupt the opponent's strategy. Trying to do both of these things typically means you're not going to do that well at either one.

This is the portion of the deck that will differ the most between players because it is often a reflection of personal taste. For example, some players may choose to include the Chaotic Swell Stadium card to disrupt their opponent, while others may prefer the Viridian Forest Stadium card to guarantee they have access to the Energy cards required to attack. This one has 26, taking up nearly half the deck, and only eight Energy!

The guidelines are always just that—guidelines—and you should always be ready to boldly diverge from them when the time comes. The first step is to identify the core components of the deck. These are the cards that are absolutely essential to the deck's primary strategy.

It's often the case that there are four copies of important cards. The more copies of the same card in a deck, the more likely it is a player will be able to draw that card when it's needed.

Stadium cards generally impact both players and stay in play indefinitely or until they are replaced. Like Supporter cards, you can only play one Stadium card per turn. There are 5 special conditions in Pokemon, including asleep, burned, confused, paralyzed, and poisoned. These conditions are most often applied to a Pokemon as a result of an attack. Whenever a Pokemon retreats to your bench, all special conditions are removed. When a Pokemon is asleep , indicate it with with a token or by turning the card to the left.

After your turn, flip a coin. If heads, your Pokemon wakes up. If tails, they stay asleep. When a Pokemon is burned , indicate it with a token. After taking damage from this condition, flip a coin. If heads, your Pokemon is no longer burned. Otherwise, your Pokemon remains burned until it retreats. When a Pokemon is confused , indicate it by turning the card upside down.

Confused Pokemon must flip a coin after they declare an attack. If heads, the attack happens as normal. If tails, the attack is canceled and the attacking Pokemon takes 30 damage instead! This condition remains until your Pokemon is retreated or becomes Asleep or Paralyzed. When a Pokemon is paralyzed , indicate it with a token or by turning the card to the right.

While a Pokemon is paralyzed, they cannot attack or retreat on their next turn. This condition is removed at the end of your turn. When a Pokemon is poisoned , indicate it with a token. While poisoned, a Pokemon takes 10 damage between each turn. This condition remains until your Pokemon retreats. Some Pokemon, like Eevee, have an ability. These abilities have a wide range of effects, so be sure to carefully read the text and follow it directly in order to properly resolve the ability.
